Although it may not be an official sub genre, dark R&B has been making a lot of noise within the underground scene, thanks to the likes of Always Never, Darci, Vi, Zeina and many more. The genre is characterised by lower range vocals built over electronic-infused trap production and usually involves themes of loss, angst, substance abuse, and the artists are known for their dark aesthetics.
Enter Shaker, not much is known about this up and coming singer-songwriter except that he’s from New York, USA. His latest single “In The Dark” is a captivating track that showcases his superstar potential and also brings a new energy in to a sub genre that had been quiet in recent months due to many lacklustre releases. The production by Cobra creates a perfect vibe for late night listening, whilst Shaker’s melodic vocals and that infectious hook makes this one of the best songs we’ve heard this year.
