Q&A: tmdistant

Getting to know Essex-based British-Nigerian alternative artist tmdistant

tmdistant started his solo journey in 2021 experimenting with genres like hyperpop, indie and pop. But by summer 2023, the 22 year-old finally found a sound that felt right—alternative rock sprinkled with touches of grunge, shoegaze and more recently, nu metal.

The son of a pastor, tmdistant’s music often feels personal and emotionally intense. His songs are packed with big hooks and bold production, thanks in part to frequent collaborators Matt Thorne and Song Higginson. Known for his energetic live shows, he’s built a growing fanbase around the world by blending raw emotion with a sound that hits hard.

DNü: If your music had to soundtrack a TV series, which one fits the vibe best?

tmdistant: Probably “this will be our downfall”.

DNü: A random fact about you people will find interesting.

tmdistant: I was in a Church choir for the first 13 years of my life and led it when I was like 11.

DNü: 5 artists you’ve got on repeat right now.

tmdistant: Julia Wolf number 1 for sure and then the rest in no order: Deftones, dye, EKKSTACY and Amira Elfeky.

DNü: What’s a line from another artists song you wish you wrote?

tmdistant: Julia Wolf where she says: “Before all the bad things happened, before I chose my armour, before I tried to tell them somethin’ was wrong, you turned me inside out.” – Such a beautiful couple of lines. I’m in love with her music so much.

DNü: Which fictional character would absolutely be a fan of your music?

tmdistant: Batman would love my music or maybe Palpatine.
