London-based dream-pop/shoegaze trio deary release new single “Seabird”
deary’s latest single, “Seabird”, pierces you with an animated jangle that had me visualising a scene being fast-forwarded and re-winded many times, a cycle broken by a beat that slingshots everything ahead, a motion that is then gorgeously elevated to a higher dimension by deep, shimmering riffs and other-worldly vocals.
It instantly reminds me of Cocteau Twins, who, with no exaggeration, produced some of my favourite music of all time. Therefore it only makes sense that deary are signed to Bella Union, a label run by Simon Raymonde of the Cocteau Twins.
What I love about this type of sound is that, though the vocals are a guiding force, the ocean of instrumentals sing by themselves and take on as much vivacious spirit. What forms is a slick soundscape of intricate spirit, whisking you away, like, I imagine, a seabird in flight on a windy day, though maybe I’m wrong.
Nevertheless, it’s a brilliant song and I recommend a listen. Their debut album, Birding will be landing on 3rd April.
