Brooklyn-based artist Will Hasell releases new single “Spindrift”
Will Hasell’s wonderful new tune, “Spindrift”, is a melting pot of folk, shoegaze and soft rock. It begins with an intro that beckons you to slow down and listen, an energy that builds like the ignition of engines. This elastic-band tension then snaps you into a gorgeous, floating melody. The magic in this tune comes from the thoughtfully layered guitar riffs that often twist and turn into uncharted territory, executed with all the picks and plucks that echo textured soundscapes the likes of Nick Drake. All the while, Hasell softly croons in a manner that radiates reflection and absorption in the moment. Speaking to me, he says that he was chasing a feeling he didn’t quite understand yet, like a trail of breadcrumbs that led to new dimensions for the song.
This is the first song that Hasell has made since moving to Brooklyn from Gainsville, Florida. The mix of emotions driving Spindrift comes from his bittersweet contemplation upon the cycles of life. “I was thinking of new beginnings as well as nostalgia for previous things”, he says. The song came to him while observing the trees in his local area, thinking of the numerous lives that they have weathered.
“I wanted the song to encapsulate the feeling that I was experiencing while in the park, walking around, kinda meditating on a big change in my life. It’s a feeling of content excitement layered with the weight of that change”. — Will Hasell.
Now firmly in his stride in New York, settled and gigging around, we can continue to expect special things from Hasell, whose new album will be dropping in a couple of months. For the time being, take a listen to “Spindrift” below.
