Phoenix James leans into intimacy and emotional urgency on “Hold On”

Phoenix James opens the world of her upcoming EP Teeth with “Hold On,” a velvety, emotionally exposed single that sits somewhere between alternative R&B and avant-pop. Soft but unsettled, the track carries a quiet intensity, folding silky vocals into a dreamlike, wounded atmosphere that feels both intimate and unstable.

There is a real sense of emotional pull in “Hold On.” Built around the feeling of trying to save something that is already slipping away, the song captures that fragile space between closeness and distance. Phoenix James does not overplay it. Instead, she lets the vulnerability sit in the production, in the phrasing, and in the quiet tension running through the track.

That restraint is part of what makes “Hold On” land. Co-produced with frequent collaborator Abner Dennis, the single feels soft around the edges but never weightless. There is melancholy in it, but also movement – a sense of emotional resistance that keeps the song suspended in mid-air. It is tender, hazy and full of ache.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, raised in Miami, and now based in New York City, Phoenix James brings a distinct sense of shape to her music. Her sound moves through alternative R&B, glitchy pop and something more dreamlike, always with feeling at the centre.

With “Hold On,” Phoenix James offers a strong entry point into Teeth — one that feels sensual, bruised and hard to shake.
