Another Country $$$$ drop new single “MOTH”

Manchester’s Another Country $$$$ have just dropped their newest single, “MOTH”, a striking balance of alt-electronic and a more ambient, orchestral centre. This tune conjures a unique mood. It begins with an eerie, echoey melody that steadily mutates and eventually explodes into a tidal wave of intersecting sound and rhythm.

“I think I’ve always found moths really fascinating”, says Sam Shorter from Another Country $$$$. “Growing up, our house backed onto a wooded area and a big patch of grass, so the house was always full of them. And I feel like there’s something about moths that creates this strange juxtaposition- they’re kind of hideous and creepy, but also beautiful in their own way.”

I can understand Shorter’s perspective. The percussion and synths may transcend into a charged and cathartic release, but the tender heart that is the underlying strings and melody remain pensive and tapped into the obscure. Indeed, the song itself and the associated iconography were inspired by a very surreal dream, explains Shorter.

“I was lying in bed and a moth appeared above me, completely motionless, and I was kind of paralysed. It might have spoken to me- I can’t really remember – I just remember that within the dream I somehow knew it was meant to be an apparition of someone in my family that I’d lost.”Another Country $$$$.

Perhaps this is why I personally felt neither complete joy nor sadness throughout my many listens, but instead registered an energy that encapsulated both the ups and the downs of life. Shorter continues, “I woke up feeling quite disturbed by it, but also finding something strangely joyous about the image.” The moth, a symbol of metamorphosis and awareness, seems fitting for this multifaceted statement.

Another Country $$$$, comprising Sam Shorter, Oliver Knight and their band, approach each song with an emotion or state of mind in their sights, and often end up synthesising something near genre-less, sound spliced from sweaty dance-floors and intimate gigs alike. They feel grounded and fortunate to be a part of Manchester’s bustling soundscape, often collaborating with and feeling inspired by pals such as Crimewave and SILVERWINGKILLER.
