80vii – Train of Thought [Review]

Train of Thought is the latest project by Toronto based artist 80vii (pronounced eighty seven), the follow up to last years eclectic debut project This Side.

The album opens up with the standout track and triumphant “Mirror Mirror” which exemplifies banger-status with its hip-hop meets classical production. Throughout the project the Canadian artist showcases his versatility as an artist as he combines a plethora of genres with ease — alternative R&B, hip-hop and even dancehall-infused sounds on the excellent radio-ready track “Bag”.

“Its been a long year and a lot has happened that has contributed heavily to the crafting of my debut album “Train of Thought”. I’ve been super blessed to have the opportunity to make this all real. This project speaks to so many different facets of life that every single person on this planet can relate to. I was able to tap into a place I haven’t been before with my music. So whether it’s love, joy, depression, denial, addiction, anger, elation, self-discovery/realisation, I’ve found a way to fuse my experiences to my music and  there’s a little something for all of my listeners on this one!” — 80vii via email.

Despite delivering another solid project, there’s a few tracks on Train of Thought that should’ve been left in the vault. However, the well-polished and appealing production made this album an enjoyable listen throughout. Tracks such as “Maniac” and “Tell The Truth” give listeners an insight of 80vii’s potential as a singer and songwriter — a bright future ahead.

Songs to add to your playlists asap: “Mirror Mirror”, “Bag”, “Joy”, “Maniac” + “Tell The Truth”.
