Vero announce new album and release lead single “100 Calls”
Given the start of a year already steeped in nostalgia, from 2016 throwback trends to the latest Stranger Things season reviving the 80s, there’s a new classic indie rock track to fall in love with. Stockholm based trio Vero is back with a new lead single “100 Calls” recalling an iconic 80s buzz with a classic band structure and shoegaze vibes.
The track opens and everything feels slightly out of focus, the fuzzy hue of an alt band easing into action. Distortion arrives first, followed by lightly ticking drums beneath vocals that entice with casual off-handedness. A bass acts as your constant companion throughout the song, simple yet layered, a reliable riff to hold your hand. It’s an open-ended beginning, feeling as if the song is stretching before it commits to running, gaining momentum as the track comes alive.
With the chorus approaching, the sound thickens, the distortion intensifies, the instruments knit tighter and each part reinforces the other, spurring the track on. And when that chorus hits, it’s an explosion of intensity, a warm wide hug of sound that totally embraces you.
When the second verse dials things back, that pressure lingers. You’re left eagerly awaiting the return of that full, pleasing sound. By the time the second chorus finally arrives, everything locks back into place with an easy inevitability. It’s a feeling all too satisfying, a roar in your ears. The familiarity of the thickened guitars, distortion poring outward, it makes the whole song feel well-rounded and predictable in the best sense.
Whilst listening to “100 Calls” with your eyes closed, you’re almost transports into a gig, the feeling of a live room, bodies swaying, heads nodding, volume creeping steadily upward. It leaves you feeling energetic and addicted.
The trio, made up of Julia Boman, Clara Gyökeres and Amanda Eddestål, first emerged in 2017, and “100 Calls” marks the lead single from their much anticipated forthcoming LP, Razor Tongue. It’s the bands first multitrack release since Unsoothing Interior in 2022, which was highly praised.
Vero have carved an amazing space for themselves within pop-punk and indie rock, with the all female group delving into ‘rougher, rawer territory’ next. If one thing is for sure, you will not want to miss out on what’s to come.
