Q&A: MYAH

Getting to know Surrey-based singer-songwriter MYAH

MYAH fuses indie, soul, pop and hints of disco into a sound that’s smooth, vibrant and unmistakably her own. In just a year, the DIY artist has been turning heads with a soulful voice and a stage presence full of warmth and charisma.

Despite only having two singles out, she’s already built a loyal following, thanks to regular live shows and open mic performances. Her music strikes a balance between relatable storytelling and irresistible grooves, making her one of the most promising new voices to watch right now.

DNü: When did you fall in love with music?

MYAH: It’s hard to remember a time I wasn’t in love with music. There’s a song for everything you go through. But about 18 months ago, when I started playing with my band I really felt that wow this is what I wanna do. The shift from accompanying myself, to expressing myself by freely moving on stage, really unlocked a new kind of freedom, passion and connection to music.

DNü: 3 French words you learnt while shooting in Paris.

MYAH: Shamefully, my French is as bad as every other ignorant Brit abroad. But I did learn that my next single ‘Patience’ is also ‘Patience’ in French, just pronounced way sexier. I might start saying it with a French accent, though no one needs to hear that attempt.

DNü: How do you keep yourself motivated?

MYAH: I love taking myself out alone as it makes you an observer of the world. I always gain new song ideas, a fresh perspective, and sometimes random chats with strangers whose lives are nothing like mine. It reminds me how much is out there beyond my own routine. When I feel burnt out and have nothing in my creativity cup, a solo date is the quickest way to fill it again.

DNü: What’s your favourite song right now?

MYAH: ‘Polly’ by Dora Jar. My friend Malaika (who’s also performing at DNü Fest) showed me her EP Digital Meadow the other week and I’ve been obsessed ever since. It’s so freeing to listen to and it has opened up a whole new world of music. It just makes me feel so happy.

DNü: Which cartoon character would totally vibe with your music?

MYAH: Probably Lola Bunny. She’s chaotic, speaks her mind, and isn’t afraid to question the male ego. She’d 100% get bored of a man who sends the same good morning and good night text… so she’d defo vibe with my song ‘Can I Call You Jane?’.
